ima (intense molecular activity) is the duo of don hunerberg (synthesizers) and andy blinx (drums and percussion). based in new york city and active between 1979 and 1982. don, a studio sound / music engineer and musician, andy an electronic clothing designer, drummer and sound reinforcement engineer at downtown clubs like max’s kansas city, mudd club and cbgb. in between doing sessions at radio city music hall studios for groups such as ramones, richard hell, sonic youth, liquid liquid, john zorn, glenn branca and many others, ima took advantage of off hours to create their own music. as far as influences go, don’s background was in electronic music and andy’s in prog rock. to produce the songs, don used his own method of creating patterns from 2-track tape loops and then edited them together on to a 24-track recorder adding more tracks of overdubs, in a very similar way that sequencers are used today.

re-release! black truffle is honoured to present the premier recordings of two recent works by legendary american experimental composer alvin lucier. a friend and contemporary of pioneers like robert ashley, david behrman, gordon mumma, and christian wolff, lucier has been crafting elegant explorations of the behavior of sound in physical space since the 1960s. lucier is perhaps best known for i am sitting in a room (1970), in which he repeatedly re-recorded his own speaking voice being played back into a room until the room’s resonant frequencies entirely obscure the spoken text. beginning in the early 1970s, he has written a remarkable catalogue of instrumental works that focus on phenomena produced by the interference between closely tuned pitches, such as audible beating, often using pure electronic tones produced by oscillators in combination with single instruments.

carl gari is a group of three from munich: jonas yamer, till funke and jonas friedlich. they released their well received and idiosyncratic debut (npr mentioned it as one of the 50 best albums in 2016) on the trilogy tapes, for which they collaborated with egyptian singer and spoken word artist abdullah miniawy. for the second release on permanent vacation they perfected their unique blend of psychedelic ingredients, dubbed out drums, drony sounds and a general hazyness. the mystic chants of abdullah, who is also featured on two tracks, weave themselves into the bands lively sound texture. apart from that carl gari showcase the diversity of their analogue driven and melodic approach to electronic music through four beautifully detailed tracks.

marcel vogels intimate friends label welcomes a newcomer to the fold, with hypoleon displaying a warm and inviting take on outboard, leftfield, electronic soul with a wavey edge to it. the vocals on the original tracks have a haunting edge to them thanks to some hefty processing, but the power in the delivery is undeniable. the tracks meanwhile channel acid, electro and minimal wave in understated ways, played out with a live band dynamic that hooks you in from the start. jon mcmillions remix of tresberry turns the track into a simmering 4/4 jam for the warm up heads to get loose to, while tevo howard brings some of his signature boxy acid to bear down on the track.

jono ma (of jagwar ma) and angus gruzman (of dreems, die orangen) present “the dreemas”. recorded between their studios in industrial north london and the rogue outskirts of berlin, the dreemas is an electronic cryogenic stasis of two life-long friends in varying states of crisis, conversion and transcendence in the year 2017. two minds and hearts coalesced into an ocean of sound, the groundwork formed with over a decade of instinctive studio sessions, sweat-riddled dj conferences, and shoulder-to-shoulder dance dos in clubs, pubs and dusty down under doofs. they’ve spent endless hours together at the bottom of salty oceans gazing up at alien aquatic life forms. for years they’ve shared synthesisers across continents, exchanged records, lived together, flown together and bleed together. and at long last they have signed a contract that says they will “techno together”. the past presents the future, and the future presents the past on this soul-state snapshot of 2 friends encapsulated in the epoch of a 12”.

2018 repress ,how much do you really know about nina kraviz? shes a russian techno dj, an accomplished producer, one of dance musics breakthrough names of the last five years. true enough, but theres so much more to her story than that. shes one of electronic musics most interesting characters, someone who has stuck to her musical guns since day one, someone who has wide-ranging roots that run deep in the past, yet shes also the embodiment of the future. her signature sound is a raw blend of house and techno with a very acidic feel. if that feels very now, kraviz has a lot to do with it, which is why she was asked to mix the latest instalment of !k7s landmark dj kicks series.

killekill house trax is going strong – this time with a 4-tracker by the incredible andreas gehm. he sent us the music shortly before his death and said we could pick any of his artist names and his only condition was that the music was released on vinyl. only after his death we realized that he had obviously already taken a decision then… so we are releasing this record now as an homage to one of the most creative and funniest persons in the electronic universe of the last decade. the ep includes all his typical styles and ranges from hard jacking acid house over weirdo electro house to old school chicago- leaning piano house. a timeless record for all situations. may you rest in peace, andreas, and thanks for still rocking our floors, even when you are long gone!

the twelfth modal analysis release brings athens based morah to the frontline of the label s roster, along with the new york based, vapauteen on the remix duties. voltage ep carries 3 original tracks by the greek electronic music producer, along with a very special reintrpretation by the american artist, also known as shawn o sullivan. aesthetics vary from slow and hypnotic rhythms to driving ebm riffs and harshly distorted percussions. morah approaches the sound of modal analysis while maintaining his distinct charachter as a producer, using here field recordings and processed vocals.

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.
